What is Music Transcription?
Music transcription is the process of listening to an auditory music source, whether it be a recording or a live performance, and turning it into notated sheet music. As a professional music transcriber, I have the specialized skills required to produce sheet music that clearly captures and communicates the style and intent of these musical recordings and performances.
I have extensive experience producing sheet music for a variety of genres, including jazz, pop, rock, choral music, solo piano and classical music. Furthermore, I service clients from many backgrounds with very different transcription needs: band leaders, musical directors, choir leaders, students and casual players. With my experience and skills, I have developed an individualized approach that tailors the transcription to your unique needs and purposes. This includes, but is not limited to, adapting a transcription for a different instrument, SATB choir scores, lead sheets, detailed jazz solos, condensed scores, transposition into different keys and simplifying complex parts for easier playing. I can also transcribe and notate your original music or other recorded songs for which sheet music is unavailable.
FAQs
What is the expected turnaround for a music transcription?
It usually takes one week to complete most music transcriptions. However, the completion time depends on the complexity of the piece and my current transcription workload. After you contact me with your request, I will provide an expected delivery time. Transcriptions can be expedited to meet urgent deadlines for a small surcharge.
How much does a music transcription cost?
As music transcriptions vary in complexity, length and instrumentation, prices will vary depending on the piece of music and request. Past transcriptions completed have varied from $50 to $300. I strive to price myself fairly and I will send you a quote before you commit to the commission. I offer discount rates for bulk requests.
What payment options are available to me?
Currently, I accept payments via Paypal, Zelle, Venmo, or direct bank transfer. Upon completion of the transcription, I will send you a tax invoice for completing payment.
What formats do you provide the transcription in?
Using the music notation software Sibelius, I will provide you with professional sheet music as a PDF file (that can be published or duplicated). I can also provide you with a MIDI file, Sibelius file or XML file (for finale or musescore users) as well as transpositions for no additional charge.
How does the music transcription process work?
The transcription process can be summarised into four steps
1. You contact me with your request. I will listen to the music you want transcribed and we will discuss your specific needs for the transcription. Once we agree upon a quote, I will start transcribing your recording.
2. I will transcribe the recording by ear using the notation software Sibelius. I will send you a sample of the music partway through the process to double check that my work is satisfying your requirements.
3. Once complete, I will send the transcription files to you via email and/or google drive link. You are now ready to play the transcription to your heart’s content!
4. If you require amendments to the transcription, I offer small adjustments in formatting and other small revisions at no additional cost.
